Funeral flower guidance

Traditional funeral flower choices

The following is intended as a guide in how we work with funeral flowers and the choices open to you , this is not an exhaustive list and we recommend that you call us as soon as is possible to discuss your requirements and availability of some flowers used.

Chrysanthemums are traditional funeral flowers. They are available in a number of colours, white, yellow, burgundy, lilac, tan and pink as well as the more unusual green button chrysanths which provide a perfect foil for stronger colours like bright pink or orange . The double variety (chrysanthemum euro) are traditionally used as basing material for massed wreaths, posies and name tributes, white being the most usual colour. Pink and yellow are also used . Single Chrysanthemums are daisy-like and give a freshness to a funeral tribute. White Chrysanthemums can be sprayed any colour where a design funeral tribute is required such as tankards of beer or brightly coloured logos and badges .

Where a red base is required carnations are used, there are no true red chrysanthemums. They are available in an ever growing range of colours and when used as a base give a wonderful textured finished. Carnations are long lasting which also adds to their popularity. As a funeral flower choice roses are a favourite signifying love, honesty, passion and innocence dependent on colour you can express a wide range of emotions. The visual impact of a full length rose coffin spray with trailing foliage is simply breathtaking. Red roses are the most traditional funeral flower used, but white has great impact as does yellow, pink or even orange. For more on the meaning of all the different coloured roses please see our language of flowers page. This may help you in your choices. Lillies are a very traditional choice when it comes to funeral flowers, there are several types of lily and the colours available are white, orange (salmon) yellow and pink, although new strains are being developed all the time .

Longiflorum lilies which are trumpet shaped and probably the most recognisable are white only. They are a traditionalfuneral flower and look best tied in a traditional sheath because of the way they hold themselves, they are also used in coffin sprays and as accent sprays on large based tributes. Asiatic lilies which have smaller flower heads are used in sprays on based or massed tributes or where a smaller flower head is required.Oriental lilies, open out fully with petals turning back. The size of the flowerhead can vary,Lilies will open out when they are ready, and not before, they can not be predicted and as such it is very difficult to have them ready at the right time. Lily based funeral tributes are best ordered well in advance to ensure the flowers give their best visual impact. We will remove the lily pollen from the flowers before delivering, this is to avoid the pollen staining the flower, or clothes, given that the tribute will need to be handled and moved several times. The pollen is also poisonous to some small animals.

Calla lillies can cost a lot of money, depending on the size of the flower, they do provide some stunning colours and give great visual impact with a small number of flowers. New colours are available including a very dark almost black and a lovely deep red or burgandy lending themselves to the more unusual eyecatching designs. More unusual funeral flower choices Personal taste will be the main factor in determining which tribute you will choose, from the more traditional tied sheath to a more modern abstract design using unusual flowers and foliage , if you wish to express your feeling with a tribute that is out of the ordinary then why not consider the visual impact of 'feeling green' button chrysanthemums and deep red roses or vivid pink gerbera daisies, a based heart made up of hydrangeas, cluster wreaths with seasonal fruit and berries ideal for autumn funerals .

Sunflowers, orchids and Kangaroo paws can all be used to great effect to enable us to create something truly spectacular and eyecatching but please do check with us for availability and prices. People often wish to match their choice of funeral flowers to their loved one's favourite colours. Most colours can be accommodated . Most flowers come in an array of colours and painted flowers are definately an option when considering an unusual colour.

make your purchase mean a little more use the language of flowers to express those emotions.
